BBBBXXI - SATURDAY Run List & Signups

Dusty

I Started This Gangsta Shit
So Cal Broncos OG
THIS WILL FUNCTION AS OUR SIGNUP SHEET! Please indicate your Run Choice for Saturday of Bronco Bash, June 11, 2022, by casting your "vote" in this poll. This vote is not binding, you may change your choice at any time. This just gives us an idea of how many people are interested in this run, and if it needs a run leader or can be left as a DIY run. Please note the TIME and STAGE area for each run. The TIME noted is the time the run leader will leave the staging area for the trail, so please show up in plenty of time to be ready to leave at that time, including any necessary bullshitting, tire kicking, etc. Show up at the staging area already FUELED UP and ready to go.

*These runs leave at 8:00 instead of the customary 9:00 due to the distance covered. Details on the various trails, along with maps, descriptions and difficulty notes, can be found HERE. A list of Staging areas with their exact locations can be found HERE.

If you would like to volunteer as a Run Leader please let me (@Dusty ) know, and I'll put you down. If you would like to lead a run but on a different trail or time than those listed above, let me know and I will add it to the list/poll. Volunteering as a Run Leader is MUCH appreciated, as it helps out those who are new to So Cal Broncos and Bronco Bash, who might not already be situated with where to go and what to do at the Bash.

We will do our best to solicit and designate run leader volunteers for the runs that have the most interest. But if there is no run leader designated by the run date, it will be a "DIY" run, meaning that whoever shows up will need to figure out among yourselves where to go and what to do. In that case it's best to carry maps, GPS, etc., and have a general knowledge of the trail before you set out to run it. If nobody in the DIY group has been on the trail or has proper navigation equipment and the confidence to find your way, please abort and find something else to do.

So, I'm curious, what do you think is the "easiest" of the "medium" trails? I want to stretch my legs a little, ease back into things since I haven't done anything in a long time so I thought something a little more challenging than a "easy" trail, but not too much more would be a good idea.

"Easiest of the Mediums" on that list would definitely be Little John Bull. It's a fairly short trail with only one real obstacle that might require 4WD, depending on which direction the run leader chooses to run the trail. The run leader may also choose to tack on Burnt Flats and/or The Squeeze, in order to lengthen the trail. But if you really want to get more of a challenge without getting too deep into potential trouble, I would suggest one of the other Mediums on the list, since Little John Bull barely makes that threshold and only for one short section.

Alright. Do you know your way? Do you know how to connect it to Coon Creek?
Yes, I've checked it out on a couple of maps, and I have GAIGPS and OnX both as well and I'm generally familiar with the area too. BTW, real name is Joerg Hallbauer. I should be easy to spot in a bright blue Gen6 Badlands with license plate JOERGH. :-)

Alright I've added your name as the run leader. Thanks for taking that on. Note that some of the online trail guides show Coon Creek as an up-and-back route, but note that you can run it as a loop, in one direction, coming back out to Highway 38 without having to backtrack. Our own trail map on the SCB website depicts it that way if you need it. https://socalbroncos.net/coon-creek-jumpoff/

Yup, I saw that. So assume we run Wildhorse North to South, pick up 38 and then Coon Creek either east to west or west to east in a loop starting/ending on 38, any recommendation on which direction would be better?

Run Coon Creek west-to-east, going in at Heart Bar. That way you're not backtracking on 38 after you come out.

By the way if you finish that early and still want to tack on another short piece of trail on your way back, you can add Balky Horse Canyon. Jump back off the 38 at mile marker 41 just a mile or so past Onyx Summit, and take 2N01 down to Broom Flat, then 2N04 up through Balky Horse and back to 38 a little closer to town.

@BadSquatch another thing I should mention if you're not familiar with it, there's a way to get over to the Wildhorse Trailhead from Moonridge, without haveing to go all the way around Sugarloaf on the 38. From the staging area at Brownie Lane, you'll just go up toward the Bear Mountain Ski Area, and take Sand Canyon Road across to Wildhorse. It's a bit of a convoluted route through the residential area so you'll want to set it up on your GPS before you leave, so you don't have a line of 10-20 rigs following you when you miss the turns. Ask me how I know LOL.

This will be my first Bash. Based on the description, it seems like i have a nearly identical setup as BadSquatch.

I'm confident in my Bronco, but I'll be with my kids (4 & 6) and I'm worried about how much time they'll be sitting in the back without a break. I heard rumors of a run that may include a stop at a shop for snacks in the middle. Is that real? My "Bad Squatch" can handle any of the medium trails, and we're not looking for a day full of groomed dirt roads because of the kids. Any recommendations?

Clark to Radford is one of the trails that has a shop. Most of the time we come down Clark stop at the shop or across the shop have lunch and then head back up radford. Also the shop is just off of highway 38 so you could take the highway back if the kids are done fir the day.

Pioneer trail has restaurant at the end where you can eat lunch or get something to drink and then head back on the trail or the highway.

I'm leading that run, it should be fun! As for gear, this is a super easy trail, so no heavy duty recovery gear is going to be needed for this trip. You also don't have to air down, but you might consider it for a "smother" ride. If that's the case you'll need a way to air back up again at the end of the run. Also note that we are doing both Wildhorse and Coon Creek, so we might be out there during lunch time depending on how quick we go. If you can handle a late lunch, then no bother, you can grab it when you get back to Big Bear. If the kids are tired at the end of Wildhorse, you can alway head back to Big Bear on 38 from the south trailhead while we head over to Coon Creek to continue the fun. Finally, if you have a radio so you can communicate with the group, that would be great. That's it, it's gonna be a blast! See you there.
