Big Bear Bronco Bash XXII - Overview

Added to Calendar: 06/08/23, 06/09/23, 06/10/23, 06/11/23

Me also. Figure I come on the forums to find what gear is needed for the trail runs. I'm hoping to find some easy runs to get started on and then progress. Wondering do we need recovery gear, a radio for comms a tire deflator, heck not sure where to start but figure msg someone here.
Some of it covered here: https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/must-haves.521/ but not all of it. As you gain experience your own list will grow and change with you. I would prioritize a radio (so others can find you if you're lost) and being able to air up and down. Suggest that you use what you have in your driveway so that you're familiar with it (& know that it works!) when you need to use it.

It’s always good to have some recovery gear no matter what. A way to air down and back up again is optional for the easy trails, but I recommend it to make the ride more comfortable. As for comms, I use a Baofeng radio that can do both GRMS and 2 meter. That covers me for both SoCal Broncos runs as well as other clubs in So Cal. You can pick one up on Amazon for like $50. Poke around on these forums a bit and I’m sure you can find a couple of threads talking about which radio to get. I also have a shovel and some tools. Last but not least, a fire extinguisher.

Big Bear Bronco Bash is So Cal Bronco’s annual Main Event. Now in it’s 22nd year, “The Bash” is a long weekend of Bronco Enthusiasts coming together to hit the trails and hang out. BBBB is an “unevent,” meaning there is no official registration, no steering committee, and no official schedule (though we do make some suggestions). It is absolutely FREE to attend Big Bear Bronco Bash and enjoy whatever is going on, as we have no official apparatus for charging money and incurring costs. But that doesn’t mean nothing happens. Far from it! BBBB is an all-volunteer event, with individuals and groups stepping forward to make each aspect of the event happen. In some cases they will ask for and accept donations to help cover their costs. But attendance and participation is free. That said, a “DIY” event like this does place some responsibility on each participant. There is nobody to herd you, nobody to tell you where to go and what to do. So it’s up to you to join in the discussions here on the forum and on our socials to find out how to make the most of the event. Here and in the other BBBB threads we'll be posting all of the pertinent information so stay tuned, stay engaged, and ask questions if there's anything you need more info about!

THE TRAILS OF BIG BEAR BRONCO BASH

Hitting the trails with your So Cal Broncos brothers and sisters is the greatest thing about Big Bear Bronco Bash! We will be compiling a list of suggested trail runs and times, and will post them in a dedicated thread here on the forum to help in your planning. If you'd like to check out the available trails and past So Cal Broncos runs, they're all cataloged on our static So Cal Broncos website. Plan ahead so you’ll know what trail you’re doing each day so you can make the most of your time in Big Bear.

Quick question..... for the runs, do we need to purchase a pass/permit to access the trails?

OK, got it all worked out. We will drive up on Wed. night, and I'll be at BBBB on Thurs and Friday. Then we head back down the mountain on Friday night. So, I'm up for runs on Thurs and Friday. Can't wait!
Update! The party for my God Daughter has been moved to the weekend AFTER BBBB!!!!!! That means I'm all on for the entire weekend now. Can't wait for BBBB.

It's always a good idea to carry recovery gear. Tire deflators and an air pump will come in handy as well. Comms are always good. I have both GMRS/FRS as well as VHF which I believe is the preferred SoCal Broncos radio. I'm new here so hopefully someone will chime in as well. Don't forget Sunblock and a hat 🤠
I have the same question about what radio to bring. These are what I already have.IMG_7772.jpeg

Given that it's a Rugged I expect that it has been programed by them and is not easily reprogrammed without some special gear. It likely has desert race freqs in it, but unless it will display them there's no way of knowing what they are. Rugged can likely tell the owner what they are, but they may need the unit's s/n or something to be able to look it up.

I did a little poking around and there is software you can get that runs on Windows to program the R1. https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/RRS-R1...-the-R1-radio-from-Rugged-Radios-_p_1984.html

BTW, the software + cable yo need is only $35. So not bad cost wise to be able to program that radio with GMRS and others.

Doctor's office had to move my shoulder surgery (detached shoulder tendon) two weeks which puts it only two weeks before the BBBB, so I'm going to have to wait and see how I'm doing and if I think I can run any of the trails. Note: I drive a manual.

I went to the Bronco Safari (1st week of May), so driving with the sling on is not a problem, BUT, I'm concerned with the bouncing on the repaired tendon, this is the second surgery to repair it. All the other work done on the first attempt is doing great, so maybe? An easy trail shouldn't be too bouncy? Should it?

I'm looking at the Overland Trail on Friday and Clark's Grade on Saturday. Any feedback on those trails would be great!

Both of those routes are considered "Easy" (depending on any changes in conditions due to this winter's storms, and we haven't done an in-person evaluation on those trails yet since the storm, which we hope to do before the Bash).

I would encourage you to choose something else for Saturday as the Clark's Grade run will be backtracking on parts of the trail you will have already covered on the Overland to Big Bear route. Maybe consider the Wildhorse Meadows & Coon Creek run instead.

Thanks for that info. If things were different I'd want to do the one that goes to Little John, but my brain says no! So, maybe I try Horsethief Flats then? you know as a compromise with myself. If the Overland run on Fri. makes me think twice about the shoulder I can go down to the easier run, if there's still space.

New member. This will be my first time attending. I have some friends who want to join who don't have Broncos. Is it OK for them to join or is that frowned upon? Trust me I'll tell them to take a hike if I need to! LOL.

Of course they're welcome. But there is a bit of a hoop for them to jump through if they plan to join you on any of the designated runs. They will need to add their name to whatever run(s) they are going on, and that will require registering in this forum. Also please make sure they familiarize themselves with all of the information available about the event so they understand what it is and isn't.

Special thanks to fearless leader @Dusty for leading today's trip! Everyone had a ball and even got home safe! Tons more pics to follow
