BBBBXXIII - Friday Horsethief Flats & More Run (Medium)

Dusty

I Started This Gangsta Shit
So Cal Broncos OG
NOTE: THIS RUN IS FULL. Please choose one of the other runs being offered or set one up yourself. Here are my notes on how to do so.

I'll be leading a run on Friday of Big Bear Bronco Bash, and invite anyone who's interested to join me.
  • DATE & TIME: Friday, June 7, 9:00 AM
  • TRAIL RATING: Should be Medium, depending on the condition of the trail and whatever else we tack on.
  • TRAILS: Horsethief Flats & More (see description)
  • STAGING LOCATION: Big Bear Convention Center parking lot at the corner of Big Bear Blvd. and Division Drive. Google Maps LINK
  • MAX VEHICLES: 20
  • COMMS: SCB-3 (VHF 146.460)
This should be a "Medium" run. I'm not 100% sure on the route we will take yet but it WILL include Horsethief Flats as the main component. We may tack on Tip Top Mountain, and possibly come through Broom Flats and Balky Horse Canyon on our way back, if I decide to return by that route. All of these are rocky/bumpy but not too technical. The only real wildcard will be climbing back up out of Horsethief Flats. It's been many years since I've been down there. The road is steep in places and it may be deteriorated somewhat from the winter storms. There, at least, I believe you will need 4-Low, at least for the gearing if not so much for the traction. But we'll find out together. If we come to anything that looks too gnarly for the group we can divert.

We'll meet at the Big Bear Convention Center. Please be there, gassed up and ready to roll out by 9:00. Bring a lunch, and all the usual gear. Spare tire and the tools to change it, a tow strap and secure tow points at both ends. Plenty of water and/or your hydration of choice. Please make sure your cooling system is working well. If it's a hot day, the climb out of Horsethief Flats can put it to the test. This is mostly meant for my Early Bronco friends. Cooling shouldn't be an issue for the 6G's if driven right.

I'd like to limit the number of vehicles to 20. If you'd like to join me please post up below and include your real name so I have more than just your forum handle. I'll only add your name to the list if you say you are definitely in.

Hey Dusty, I'm on the fence on this one depending on the trail. Since we have to head home on Friday, I'm looking for something on the side of the mountain like Clark's Grade. That way we get a "down the mountain" kinda run. But I know that Clark's might not be open either.

Yeah that's one of the reasons I'm leaving it TBD for right now. I'll be up there soon to do some recon and nail down my plan. Clark's was closed for the winter as the routine seasonal closure. I'm not sure if there's any other closures that will affect that route. We ran it last fall, after the hurricane and it was OK then.

It has been a long time since I hit Horsethief Flats, that sounds fun. But all you mention would be fine with me. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Edit: I'm in for whatever you choose.

Speaking of Clark's, I hope it's gonna be open but with all the closures, I have my doubts. Maybe I'm just jaded after last year... I've been trying to hit that trails for a WHILE. So, if it is open, and you decide not to do it on Friday, I might jump in on that one and lead that run too.

We might be able to work something like that out. You could send everyone back up the 38 rather than leading them back to town yourself. Let me get some recon on Clark's and we'll figure something out. If it turns out you can and want to lead that run I may switch to one of the others, just to offer more options.

Sounds like a plan!

Cool, I'll put you down. Please give me a real name for the list LOL.

I see you're doing John Bull instead so I'll leave you off this one :)

I'm up for Friday, may I say my preference on your list is:

Baldwin Lake to Tip Top Mountain then down to Horsethief Flats (or same in reverse)
AJ is leading a Squeeze run on Sat. I just signed up with him.

I'm planning on, and thanks for your help so far, on leading a run off the mountain on Sunday so I'll be (hopefully) using what ever part of Clark's is open, or the trail we used to come up last year. It'll be my first lead if anyone what's to help plan/lead.

If you want help with recon, I'm up if on a day I can go.

I'll start my post/list later this week, when I'll have more time to manage the posts and reply.

Marcus

not sure about your Sunday run but I may be able to help with the recon, when are you thinking?

This Sunday I'm open, I'm trying to determine what's open from the top starting at Clark's to Greenspot area. I don't want to go all the way to the top, we'll be coming from there on the BBBB run, I'll see that then, but up to the major junction/forks would be good to get an idea of what's open and the best way to lead a group down.

And after, maybe playing around on the trails that parallel hwy 38 and to get to know the area and hit some Forest Falls, near the river & in the riverbed truck trails could be fun too. Some exploring, investigating (what's open) playing near the river. It could become a small group thing.

I'll be leading a run on Friday of Big Bear Bronco Bash, and invite anyone who's interested to join me.
  • DATE & TIME: Friday, June 7, 9:00 AM
  • TRAIL RATING: Easy/Medium (will further clarify after I settle on a trail/route...probably tend more toward Medium)
  • TRAILS: TBD
  • STAGING LOCATION: TBD
  • MAX VEHICLES: 20
  • COMMS: SCB-3 (VHF 146.460)
I haven't ironed out the details yet but I'll add them here as soon as I do. I'm thinking of something on the upper end of easy or into the Medium range. Possibilites are:
  • Clark's Grade down to Bear Creek
  • Baldwin Lake to Tip Top Mountain then down to Horsethief Flats (or same in reverse)
  • The Squeeze to Little John Bull to Burnt Flat (this one might be Medium+)
I'd like to limit the number of vehicles to 20. If you'd like to join me please post up below. I'll only add your name to the list if you say you are definitely in. If you're waiting to see which trail I end up choosing, you're welcome to note your preference but I won't add your name to the list until you say you're definitely in.
