I usually do a poll at the drivers meeting to see what kind of radios everyone has. Frankly speaking, a lot of the 6G folks only have GRMS radios, so that's when we've used. I usually use one of the 16+ channels. I know those are also the repeater freqs so I try to pick one that doesn't have a local repeater in it. I just do a quick look at mygmrs to see what repeaters in that area before heading out.
I just took a look at Repeaterbook and it shows two operating in Calico.
So I would stay away from 19 or 22 for the Calico run. BTW, those two show up on Repeaterbook but not in mygmrs, and I haven't validated if they are operating or not. I'll probably check that and see if they are and program them into my mobile radio in case I need to jump on a repeater while I'm out there.
So 6G's tend to be GMRS, G1's tend to be 2M if not still cb, & we desert race support folks are 2M regardless of what we're driving. That's the great thing about having standards, we have so many to choose from!
I have some loaner 2M H-T's that I'm planning on bringing to Calico for use on my two runs.
I'm disinclined to use a repeater. Mostly for simplicity's sake for new users, but partly because I've never had any need for anything other than peer to peer.
I only have 2M options at this time. I've been debating a dual band, but then my carefully tuned 2M antenna likely becomes a problem. A stand-alone GMRS/440 band radio is a possible. Regardless, that means another radio and another antenna. At $4.75/ft RG400 doesn't come cheap......
Yeah, I love that about standards! And that’s why I went with all dual band radios. I have some HTs that are dual band I can lend out as well. For 2M SCB I show the following:
