BBBBXXII - Regarding the Trail Closures

UPDATE: Great News! The temporary trail closrures have been lifted! The information on the USFS road closure website is a bit confusing and a mix of old and current info, but it appears that the order issued in March due to the storms has been lifted early (it was supposed to be in effect through June). We'll continue to monitor and update as news comes available.

As some of you are aware, due to the recent storms the US Forest Service has issued temporary closures on many of the trails we usually use during Big Bear Bronco Bash. You can read the official closure order HERE. Note that "Mountain Top Ranger District" which says "Any Forest Road" includes all of Big Bear and Holcomb Valleys, while the Front Range Ranger District calls out specific trail closures which include all of the trails we usually run in the Santa Ana River Gorge area and many of them in the Lake Arrowhead area. These closures are set to expire on June 30th, which places Big Bear Bronco Bash within the closure dates.

We are monitoring the situation closely, making contacts and exploring ways we can either help to get these dates moved forward or grant special permissions to our group. Please do not inquire to the Forest Service on behalf of So Cal Broncos on your own. So Cal Broncos and our members have a long history with the Forest Service and the trail system. We are the Adopt-A-Trail club for Little John Bull and Burnt Flats. We have members with relationships within the Forest Service who are already looking into this. Our group includes folks with a wealth of forest experience, trail maintenance and stewardship. We stand ready to assist with trail evaluation, clearing, repairs, etc., if needed. If the opportunity comes up for volunteer crews to pitch in to get these trails opened earlier, we will of course put out the call and welcome everyone who can lend a hand.

But the bottom line here is that Big Bear Bronco Bash will go on, regardless of what happens with these trails. The worst case scenario is that all of these trails will still be closed during BBBBXXI, and that we won't be able to access them even with any sort of special permission. If that is the case, we'll simply set our sights on trails that are farther out, which aren't subject to the closures. Mostly that will mean a trip down the hill for trail runs. The Cougar Buttes, Johnson Valley, Lucerne Valley, Rattlesnake Canyon areas aren't that far away. We had already planned on adding a run or two down the hill, including a trek to Bronco Knoll. So we'll just have to expand on that strategy.

More likely is that some of the trails will open early and we'll have access to at least some of them. Reports are that some of the trails included in the blanket closure order aren't under very much snow and are in good shape, and will be in their normal shape by May or early June. So we anticipate still having access to some, maybe most, hopefully all, of the affected trails. But if we don't, we'll adapt and overcome.

If you were looking forward to Big Bear Bronco Bash but are concerned about these closures, my advice is to continue to plan to be there. While I can't guarantee that any of the closed trails will be back open by then, I can guarantee that you'll still have a great time. You may have to drive a bit further for the trail rides, but everything else that makes Big Bear Bronco Bash special will still be there: The people, the brotherhood, the food, the party, the Damn Good Times you'll have with your Bronco buddies.

Thanks for the clarification Dusty! Let me know if there's anything you need help with in this regard. I'm happy to help in any way you need me, including leading runs.

Well, we are starting to see some trails open back up. But some of the connecting trails are still closed. For example, Clarks Grade (1N54) is showing as open, but Mill Creek (2N10) is still showing as closed. The good news is, it's only April!

I'd bet that's due to annual lifting of the winter closure for Clark's Grade (its closed every winter). But while that specific closure has lifted automatically, the temporary general closure is probably "technically" still in effect. If it's showing as Open on the USFS road closures web page, I would bet that's a glitch due to the interaction of the annual and temporary closures.

At any rate, its starting to look like the temporary closures are being treated as more of an advisory than a jail threat. Getting reports of groups using the trails up there as normal. The Forest Service simply doesn't have the resources to patrol and police them. I'm betting they will either just lift them all sometime in the next few weeks, or let them run out without worrying too much about people ignoring them.

I bet you're right, unless there are gates that are locked. I'm looking at Trails Offroad's website and they definitely differentiate between Seasonal Closures and Temporary Closures. They show Front Line Road (1N04) as Open, City Creek (1N09) as "Temporary Closure", and Knickerbocker (2N08) as "Seasonal Closure". Just looking at the map, it looks like things further down the mountain are opening up, but as you go up you get more and more closures. They also show Rattlesnake Canyon as "Open", but Burns Canyon (2N02) as "Temporary Closure". So, with a month and 1/2 or more to go, hopefully we will get a lot more "Open" trails on the mountain. Hope springs eternal!

I will be there on Friday and Saturday, I really hope that a trip to Bronco Knoll will be on the agenda for Saturday, need to do the bucket list. I have a new set of GMSR Midland GTX radios, i hope some people use these as well, I know most of you use the boafeng radios.

Thanks for the updates. As a new guy to the group I’m very much looking forward to this event. That being said I’m pretty close to big bear in Corona if there is any assistance needed, I would love to help.
All my best-

The official "channels" used by SoCal Broncos are 2 meter ham. Take a look at the spreadsheet that I downloaded in the Latest Resources section. but in short they are 1682012607950.png

Now the question is what shape are they in?

Trail Closure Update. I spoke with Danny Bogner (@bogshotrods), our resident Big Bear agent and Forest Service liaison, the other day. Danny said that Forest Road 2N10 is still closed due to snow, which also means Clark's Grade is still closed as of the last time he checked. Danny did say that he believes Redford Truck Trail is open, and that there's still a slight chance they may plow 2N10 and open it along with Clark's Grade before the date of the Bash. Seeing as how that is only a week and a half away, we need to plan some contingencies for the runs that use Clark's Grade.

This affects the Friday "Overland to Big Bear" run, led by Kurt Gerum @KCgerum, and the Friday and Saturday Clark's Grade to Bear Creek runs led by Oscar Espinoza @Acfabb_oscar and Randy Ludwig @Bukin'eer.

As of right now I'm not yet changing the run descriptions. But if Clark's Grade isn't open by the Bash, all of those runs will simply use Radford Truck Trail instead. If for some reason Radford is also closed, the Overland to Big Bear run will continue on up the Santa Ana River to use Wildhorse Meadows to make the final climb over the hill into Big Bear. But the Friday and Saturday Clark's Grade to Bear Creek runs will be completely re-routed over to the north side of Big Bear Lake. I will map out a new route that will string together some of the easy routes over in the Holcomb Valley area.

Don't worry if none of this makes sense to you. I will be making up GPX routes for all of these contingencies and sending them to each of you, so you can look at them ahead of time or even pre-run them if you have the time.

Danny, please keep us informed if you hear any new information in the final days leading up to the Bash :) Thanks all for rolling with the punches with us.

Dusty,

What about the Thurs. Clark's Grade run I'm going to lead? I'm guessing from the above we would still do Wildhorse, and then hit Radford Truck trail instead of Clarks Grade? On the other hand, we only have one person signed up for that. Maybe combine it with Skyline or what ever may replace Skyline if it's still closed?

Well, I just checked, and 2n10 (skyline) is still closed. I drove up to the gate from the Moonridge road side and the gate there was closed.
