When my 351M (4 barrel intake and carb with headers) blew-up I didn't want to put too much money into a rebuild (was quoted like $4000+ for a roller cam rebuild) so I went with a remanufactured motor from sandjengines.com. Ordered a 400/6.6 with an RV cam installed and it arrived the same week, had to install an intake, timing cover, water pump, oil pump + pan, and break in the cam. For $1200ish it's been great.
I had to put a 2 barrel stock intake and carb on it and get all the emissions stuff set-up. Power feels the same if not torquier than the 351M even with the emissions and 2 barrel stuff.
Eventually I want a modern drivetrain in this thing but of course I'll have to pass smog so that will be tricky. Coyote motor would be ideal but they're pretty expensive, have tossed the idea of an LS motor around but we'll see..
Getting ready to pull the 351M out:
Had to pull the bumper and grill insert to get in there deep enough to pull the motor, supposedly pulling the whole front clip is quick but we didn't think so:
400/6.6 buttoned up and ready to go in. Intake is a stock 2 barrel, I just painted it that color for more horsepower /s:
Shortly after passing smog on the first try. Wasn't even set up right. I had the wrong gasket at the carb spacer blocking the EGR from working but they didn't notice. The guy said it runs as clean as a new car (whatever that really means):
