I haven't gotten that far yet. 8am would be good, not sure if we can actually pull that off. I'd say no later than 9am.
Pending getting clear of one obligation I am thinking to head out there on Thursday to look at some of the spots that have been problems in the past. Anyone interested is...
Some relevant google maps links:
Afton Canyon
Ghost town Rd Hotel
Outlet Center Hotels
Barstow Food 4 Less
Barstow Stater Bros.
Barstow Wal-Mart (it's there, the sat image is out of date)
While I'm at it, a few POI's:
BLM Desert Discovery Center
Barstow RR Terminal, Museum, & Harvey...
I'm thinking to do a trail run on Saturday in the Calico Mtn's themselves, and then another run on Sunday, possibly out to Afton Cyn.
Afton is sometimes called the "Grand Cyn of the Mojave River" for good reason. It's not as deep or as long, but it is spectacular. It is also one of the rare...
Be careful with the hotels in town (past meth-heads issues, no idea what the sitch is now). I'd look at the hotels either down at the Outlet Mall or the hotel at Ghost Town Rd.
I've done Calico trips where we got all of our provisions from the Food 4 Less sort of hidden on the North side of the...
Odessa used to be 'easy' compared to Doran. In the late 50's my dad drove his Studebaker down Odessa while on a Photography Expedition. The whole canyon road was paved back then!
As has been mentioned in previous posts, Ground Zero is usually the flat area in Mule Cyn just above where Phillips...
This is me in the avatar at "The Narrows" at the top of Odessa about 27 years ago. This is NOT as tight as as the canyon gets, but it has a rock placed perfectly to catch the LR upper corner of your top if things haven't changed.
If there's enough interest in runs that I've proposed I'd be...
Likely, I know that Goldstone Tracking Station and China Lake have expanded their boundary's. I think that you managed to get all three Tom rigs in that shot!
I started a '25 thread: https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/so-cal-broncos-calico-2025.897/
Let's kick this one off and get it going. Per Dusty's post (https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/so-cal-broncos-calico-2024.699/post-4560) in: https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/so-cal-broncos-calico-2024.699/ this will be MLK weekend, Jan. 17-19 (20 if you get MLK day off), '25
I know...
What, that was just a couple a years ago! We're not old! We're not! We're not! We're not!
LOL
I need to look at the home calendar, make sure that I haven't been conscripted for something that I don't know about, but I'm reasonably sure that I'm clear.
Think we're due for another Scenic run out...
Making your own routes is pretty easy in Gaia. Like anything there's a learning curve, but it isn't too bad. Looks like you can't try it without creating a login, at the least. Haven't used OnX enough to be able to comment about that aspect in it.
With age you get a cage?
LOL
ADV?
My suggestion is to keep that minimalist mindset, for the most part. If you're gear oriented you can spend a lot and then have a ton of weight to carry around. Try to avoid that. There's a good "recommended gear" thread around here somewhere. Several of us...
I use an iPad Pro for nav. With those it is crucial to get the cell capable version or you will need an external GPS connected to it.
I've looked at OnX, but been primarily a Gaia user due mostly to the ease of use in creating routes. The major stumbling block for me was not initially knowing...
After months of use as a DD I I'm calling this project a success. Pretty amazing to drive a Full Size on 35's that stops like a sports car. It has unintentionally lured more than one appliance driver into thinking that they can tail-gate me since 'they obviously can stop better than that old...
