So Cal Broncos OG
Let's kick this one off and get it going. Per Dusty's post (https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/so-cal-broncos-calico-2024.699/post-4560) in: https://socalbroncos.com/forum/threads/so-cal-broncos-calico-2024.699/ this will be MLK weekend, Jan. 17-19 (20 if you get MLK day off), '25

I know that there's a group that will want to run Doran and Odessa Cyn's. There's a LOT more in and around the Calicos than just those two canyons. Some of it is more or less fire roads, but not all of it. How much interest is there in seeing those areas?

I think there will be quite a bit of interest in the less-carnage routes! Note that most of the chatter for this trip is happening in the So Cal Broncos facebook group so there's quite a bit more interest in it than what is evident here in the forum.

I'm Calico Newbie that's thinking about coming out. I don't mind a challenging trail & have ran a few in my 22 bus (6G 4door) but not too interested in shoe horning through a canyon that the truck just doesn't fit. I've heard varying stories about Odessa that my old local club use to do night runs ( I don't drive at night if I don't have to) Just not familiar with the area much other than general location & not sure where to proceed on this one. looking at camping probably Mule Canyon as it looks free. Maybe just Friday , possible Thurs -Friday & head out Sat evening if I can figure out what is going on & where to be.
Thoughts/ suggestions welcome 🤠

Sorry I don't have FBOOK

This is me in the avatar at "The Narrows" at the top of Odessa about 27 years ago. This is NOT as tight as as the canyon gets, but it has a rock placed perfectly to catch the LR upper corner of your top if things haven't changed.

If there's enough interest in runs that I've proposed I'd be getting there sometime late Friday, with a run planned for Saturday within the Calicos and a run for Sunday that might be Afton Cyn if there's interest. I'm not planning on going anywhere near the hard core obstacles. BT, DT in the past. I was thinking about the route on the drive to work this morning and I think that I've got some new approaches to some of the destinations the OG are familiar with.

And the line-up that we had there in 2015:

@ntsqd I'd be up for a tour around the area. After researching more on Odessa , I would probably pass on it or the like there of. I'm all about the scenery so Fire roads are fine by me as well as some challenges. Just not needing to hit hardcore challenges anymore or trails that are just challenges with little else to offer.
Looks like it might be better if I just head up Friday night, or even early Sat morning if the wife wants to come out. Run a trail on Sat then head back toward Ventura County.

Odessa used to be 'easy' compared to Doran. In the late 50's my dad drove his Studebaker down Odessa while on a Photography Expedition. The whole canyon road was paved back then!

As has been mentioned in previous posts, Ground Zero is usually the flat area in Mule Cyn just above where Phillips Cyn joins Mule Cyn at Camp Rock. Roughly: 34°56'26.8"N 116°50'21.7"W

Be careful with the hotels in town (past meth-heads issues, no idea what the sitch is now). I'd look at the hotels either down at the Outlet Mall or the hotel at Ghost Town Rd.

I've done Calico trips where we got all of our provisions from the Food 4 Less sort of hidden on the North side of the fwy at the 247 exit.

If you have some spare time I suggest visiting the train station. If you get there from the south (thru Old Down Town) you will drive past the original Del Taco, and then drive over one of the coolest trestle bridges in the area..

I'm thinking to do a trail run on Saturday in the Calico Mtn's themselves, and then another run on Sunday, possibly out to Afton Cyn.

Afton is sometimes called the "Grand Cyn of the Mojave River" for good reason. It's not as deep or as long, but it is spectacular. It is also one of the rare places in CA where it is legal to drive in the sometimes wet river bottom.

Count me in for Afton Canyon, just let me know where and when to meet up for that one. I’m also interested in a non-carnage run on Sat.
