OK I see there was something else going on. All of the images in the folder except the portrait of you and Lucia were in vertical orientation. Smugmug needs a horizontal image for the cover, so it grabbed the only one available. I went and re-cropped one of the others and manually designated it...

I don't believe there's a way for a non-admin to control it but I can go in and specify a cover image.
