North LA County (Leona Divide) Run

Meeting time: 8:30am

This will be a nice easy/scenic run on Leona Divide and end at Jack's Place (https://goo.gl/maps/f5vAadnh23NEhcwA6 ) for some after run bonding over the beverage(s) of your choice. This is a 2-3 rated trail, so it's great for people who are just getting started with offloading, but everyone is welcome. It's also a family friendly event, so please be aware that there might be children listening to the radio, etc.

We will meet at the trailhead (https://goo.gl/maps/nwBQckUk1pnEAA7v7), where there isn't a lot of space. There is additional space to park across the street, and along Bouquet Canyon Rd. So, be friendly and pack in tight, but please don't block the road or the trail.

Things to bring:
  1. A good attitude and your patience. Things change on these trails constantly, so things/routes may have to change.
  2. A GMRS radio capable of speaking with any other GMRS radio (i.e. privacy codes turned off). If you don't have a radio I have a spare. However, I highly recommend you get one if you plan on hitting the trails in the future.
  3. Basic recovery equipment such as a recovery rope or tow strap and hard or soft shackles.
  4. A full sized spare tire
  5. Water and foodA way to air down and then back up again
Please fill out the form at: https://forms.gle/jLVweJaFxWSVstcq5 only folks with a completed form will be allowed on the run. Once you fill out the form you will get access to the GPX file that has the entire run in it.

Would you mind sharing a A GMRS radio capable of speaking with any other GMRS radio (i.e. privacy codes turned off) that you would recommend, for a reasonable price? Thank you.

You can turn off "privacy codes" on almost any radio. Different manufacturers call them different things sometimes. For example, Motorola calls them Privacy Tones. I can't tell you how many runs I've been on where someone has a radio with the "privacy code/tones" tuned on and they can't hear anyone. I know how to do it on a couple of brands of radios, but not on every one so my suggestion is to check your radio at home, and make sure that "privacy codes" are turned off. If the folks you're hitting the trails with want to run "privacy codes" then you all have to agree which one's to use, and again, I suggest that you have that discussion before you hit the trails and set up your radios at home. Overall, it will help speed things up at the trailhead so you can all get on the trail ASAP. Remember, "privacy codes" just keep you from hearing anyone who isn't running the "same" privacy codes as you, but it doesn't prevent someone without those codes from hearing you. So, it's not like encryption, for example.

OK, so now to answer your question. Pretty much any commercial GMRS radio will do the trick. If this is your first radio I always suggest folks start with a hand held radio. For trail runs, just to talk with the rest of the group, they are fine. They have done the trick for plenty of folks, including me. Personally, I have a Baofeng/BTECH BF-F8HP hand held. That is a dual band radio that has both 2 meter ham, and FRS/GMRS in it and has worked well for me for over a year now. You can get it for about $70 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-BF-F...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

If you prefer something more "mainstream" I've heard a lot of good things about the Midland radios in general. These wold be GMRS only, but you can get a two pack for about the same price as a single dual band like the one above. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001WMFYH...558&linkCode=ogi&tag=shopperz_origin1-20&th=1

Last, but not least, you can program your Baofeng radio using CHiRP. That's a program that runs on your computer. You plug your radio into your laptop using a special cable, and then you go into CHiRP and set up all your channels, setting, etc. This is more important with the dual band radios since they may, or may not, come preprogrammed with the channels you want. The GMRS only radios are usually preprogrammed to the GMRS frequencies/channels out of the box.

Well folks, I did a pre-run today, just to make sure that things were looking good, and there are a couple of washouts that make things a bit tight, but all pretty easily handled. Also brought a long a Jeep, just for fun. You can see the video here that's been edited by GoPro's AI.

What type of radio to purchase and where is a good place to get them
There has been a lot of good discussion about that on other threads. Personally, I have a Btech/Baofeng BF-F8HP hand held and I'm happy with it. Others use the BaoFeng UV5R hand held. Both can be bought on Amazon, I included the links in this email. Both those radios are usable on 2 meter ham, and GMRS/FRS so I've found that covers me no matter who I'm running with in SoCal.

Thanks to all of the folks that came to the run! I hope everyone had a good time, I certainly did. I uploaded all of the GoPro video to the GoPro cloud, and their AI stitched things together and added music. I will also edit some of the video by hand soon, but I thought that this would be a good start for everyone. You can find that video here:

I am so happy to have been part of this wonderful experience with the nicest people. Thank you all!

Thanks for the video. Enjoyed watching it, looks fun and cant wait for the Bash to take my Bronco out.
So not sure if this is a dumb question but going up a hill like that, would you engage the rear lockers and did you even need to engage the front lockers? Im trying to understand when we would need to use the "Hero" functions. I have the 4 door 2021 Badlands/Sasquatch.

I'm sure you would also do the 4WD.
TIA

On that little hill, no lockers were needed. I did it 4H, with the sway bar disconnected (hero switch!). Have you been to Offroadeo by any chance? They talk about that a lot (i.e. when you use the lockers, etc.).

Good to know and thanks! Planning on going to the Off Rodeo in Nevada location this summer. Appreciate the advice. Hope to meet you at the Bash or on the trails.

What days will you be attending? I'll be there all 4 days, so we should be able to find one another at some point. You can't miss me, I'm the bald guy with the blue bronco.
