Moab 2024 Epic Adventure trip report

Folks,

I just returned from Moab on Sunday, and all I can say, having not been there in 35+ years, is WOW. It was a GREAT trip, and we met some fun folks from all over the country, and even Canada! This was a bunch of us who wanted to go to Bronco Safari, and after all the changes and angst around it this year just got together and decided to go to Moab on our own. There were 23 Bronco's total, nearly 40 people, all Gen 6's. I tried to keep in mind that I was going to have to drive the Bronco home, so I kept it to moderate trails. We also went to Arches National Park but we did it via the "back entrance" on Willow Springs Road which was a lot of fun. Wheeling in a National Park! Anyway, here's a couple of pictures. I have a TON of pictures and video to curate, so more later. All I can say is, I can't wait to go back! A week there, and I feel like I just scratch the surface, along with some of my skid plates!

We started off with a BBQ at Brain and Melissa's house in Moab.

Lucia started off the week at Bronco Off-Roadeo honing her offroad driving skill in the Bronco.

After she was done there we went over to Onion Creek, and it turns out, you can connect to another trail and not make it an out and back. We even got snowed on on this run!

But the weather turned warm and clear for the rest of the week. On Tuesday we hit 3 trails. Saffer Switchbacks, Long Canyon, and Gemini Bridges.

That was a LONG but fun day with 20+ Bronco's riding the trail together.

On Wed. we hit Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners with Lucia taking over the driving. She did a fantastic job!

We even explored the wind caves

Finally, on the way back, we had to cross Kane Creek for the second time. It wasn't TOO deep ...

Thurs. was the trip to arches. As I said above, we went in via the 4x4 trail starting at Willow Springs Rd. We hit Eye of the Whale arch first, then Tower Arch. then took Tower Arch 4x4 trail into the park proper and explored some more arches like Delicate Arch, Sand Arch, etc.

Finally, on Friday we hit 7 Mile Rim trail where we checked out Merrimar and Monitor, The Waterfall, and explored some more caves.

...and that's all the pictures I'm allowed to attach. To say the least, Lucia and I had a blast and we were will a GREAT group of people.

Thanks for the writeup and excellent pictures! I've been on all of those except for Chicken Corners. Even the easy trails in Moab are amazing due to the spectacular scenery. And I will admit that the Schafer switchbacks did give me a bit of pucker LOL. At any rate, feel free to add more photos simply by adding another comment and attaching them. I don't think the forum software limits the total number of photos in a thread.

Chicken Corners is a moderate trail, and lots of fun with, as you said, spectacular views! You have to do Hurrah Pass first to get to the Chicken Corners trailhead. What's interesting is the story behind it. It seems that everyone calls it Chicken Corners, when in fact, it's actually Chicken Corner. It's called that because at the end of the trail (and talk about a view!) there's a very narrow trail that you can walk around a rock outcropping to get to the meadow on the other side. Early tours there called it Chicken Corner because some of the tourists were "chicken" to walk that trail. Having been there, I can see why! It's VERY narrow, and goes straight down for what seems like miles. I have to admit, I was "chicken" to walk it. One of our group did, however, and the look on his wife's face as she waited for him to return from around the bend was, well, sheer terror! Followed by huge relief when he returned safe and sound.

Here's what that looks like. You actually go around that corner.

There is also a tight spot you have to cross before you get to the parking area at the end of the trail. I found this drone shot of that spot that shows what it's like. the first part isn't so bad, but that last part, right before the parking area, is tight, and a little off camber down towards the river.

Anyway, I'm curating all my pictures and videos, and when I have them nicely organized I'll post some links to where everyone can check them out.

I’m still editing video from a week in Moab! I just finished Onion Creek. It’s longer than usual, but I wanted to include all the creek crossings, and there are a lot of them!
